FAMILY TIES

CHAPTER TWELVE

Sunset came early in the waning days of summer. In the west, the setting sun made a spectacular show, painting the rain-washed blue sky with swaths of gold and coral. But the tall solitary figure silhouetted against the sunset was blind to the splendor. Javert faced east, watching the new storm brewing and marveled at its power. He had chosen this location for their retreat in part because of its beautiful scenery and for its remote location. Here beyond the urban squalor of the city he could relax and he never tired of watching nature at it’s most inspiring.

The wind, cooling now that the sun had set, plucked at his silver hair hanging loose about his shoulders and the soft material of his white long sleeved shirt. As he watched the storm intently, his strong, long-fingered hands tightened on the railing of the veranda overlooking the garden. He was struggling to reach a decision. His dilemma, as he saw it, was common sense versus moral principles. Should he bow to the needs and wishes of the majority and ignore the moral principles he held dear? Could he set aside the beliefs he knew to be right in order to uphold the laws he had sworn to protect and restore order? Javert gazed across the vast stretch of trees, thinking. Life in some ways had been easier when his beliefs had been black and white…areas of gray still confused him. For months he had read, studied and consulted with the best people in the country. What would they do if they were in his place? What advice would Richelleen offer him? He missed her, her council, her nearness… a wave of desire swept over him. One thing he had decided for sure, if she did not come home soon he would go see her on some pretense and convince her to come home.
