FAMILY TIES

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Once he was gone, Karl regarded the two women with a touch of impatience. “Well, Adele!” he barked, “Do you not make any apologies to me for your abominable behavior? I bring this great honor to you and this is the thanks I get? Impertinence?”

Adele, comforting her still weeping daughter spoke through clenched teeth. “We will do as you say.”

“See that you do,” Karl grumbled. “You do not want to appear ungrateful do you?”

“No, I would never want to do that,” Adele said quietly.

Sniffing, he picked up an apple from the table and bit into it. “The meeting went well today, did it not,” he said though a mouthful of fruit.

“The men did seem to agree with your thoughts,” Richelleen said measuring her words carefully. “Except for Rene.”

Her uncle dismissed this notion with a wave of his thick-fingered hand. “He is only one man and he will bend to my will when all is said and done, that you can count on.”

“How is it that you are so sure of everything, my Uncle,” she asked.

“Never mind, some things are not for you to know,” he said, his dark eyes gleaming. “You’d better go now, and see that this child stops her wailing. We wouldn’t want the rest of our tribe to see her in such a state.” With that they left the small chamber passing Renaud on the way out which set of a new wave of tears in Runa. Richelleen’s head hurt. She needed Javert…desperately needed his council and his strength. She could not wait until she could leave here and be in his arms once again.
