BRIDGES OF TIME

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Paris-Present Day

Alix stood at the door of Remie’s office, her face etched with worry and sorrow. It was so quiet now, so empty. A fine layer of dust covered everything, a mute testament to the owner’s absence. She would get someone in to clean it. The thought that they would never find Remie snuck into her mind in unguarded moments but she would push out the hurtful feeling and refuse to give in to it. Her friend was alive! She knew it! Somehow she would have felt it if it were otherwise. So, she would keep her office ready and her apartment too. Things would be perfect for her return.

Davit, true to his word, had been working on her case during his vacation and in every spare moment in-between, but it had been slow going. She thought she sensed a hopelessness creeping into his voice during their last call but as always before he hung up he promised her he would keep at it and call her in another week. She would be strong, Alix whispered, strong enough for everyone, even her terrible family who was trying to get Remie's funds freed from the bank. Her blood still boiled remembering her last conversation with Remie’s mother. No wonder her friend had run away from them, they were not worthy of her. She would have to be patient, it would take time, and time was something she had a lot of now.
