BRIDGES OF TIME

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Paris-Present Day

Davit sat in front of his television with unseeing eyes, his mind on the disappearance of Remie. With a little luck and some digging, he had come found some news clippings that described people who had gone missing under the same circumstances as his friend. No real leads though. Not yet. He chewed his bottom lip, a habit of his when he was deep in thought. A man who disappeared under similar circumstances suddenly returned, filled with outlandish stories of where he had been. The details of his adventures had been so exact that he had gained a following that believed he had really time traveled. Davit sighed. He did not believe in such wild tales but at this point he was willing to grasp at straws, no matter how unbelievable the story was. He had no luck in tracking down Theron Raison, the man in question, but he did find a girl who knew him. A Michelle…Michelle LeNoir. He would call Alix. Women sometimes didn’t like to talk to cops and perhaps she’d open up more to her. Goodness knows he knew first hand how persuasive she could be.

“Are you sure this is the right address?” Alix looked ill at ease as she stepped out of the car. Davit understood. The neighborhood they were in was not his first pick either. “Yep. That’s what I have written down.” He took her by the arm and cast her a reassuring smile. “Let’s get this done.” Alix winked at him and squared her shoulders.

“Okay Detective, I’m your girl.”

A thin girl with dirty blonde hair and too much make-up answered the door.

“Hello? Are you Detective Jordan?”

Davit showed her his shield and she let them in. Their meeting was not long, she wanted money and would not say a word until Alix put 100 Euros into her dirty hands. Her story was convoluted and ridiculous and Alix wondered what Davit hoped to get from her. In the car she questioned him. “Well, do you believe that silly story she told you about him going and coming through a time portal of some kind?”

Davit sighed. “It’s not as strange as you might think Alix. I’ve heard of this happening to other people. They disappear …and get this…they all had this experience in the same area that Remie was in when she disappeared! And there’s more…it was either foggy or raining when it happened. I think, as ludicrous as it may sound, that there is some sort of time portal or loop or whatever you want to call it that surrounds that bridge.”

His theory was so outrageous that Alix would have laughed had the situation not been so serious. “Davit, my dear Davit, you have been working too hard.”

Davit pounded the steering wheel in frustration. “Damn it Alix, I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s the best explanation I’ve been able to come up with. Now you tell me, should we explore it or not?”

Alix felt a sudden stab of anxiety. “Forgive me, Davit. I know you’ve been working very hard and I shouldn’t make fun. It’s just so hard to swallow a story like that but you do whatever you have to do and I’ll back you in whatever way I can. I promise.”

He reached over and squeezed hand. “Thank you Alix. We’ll find her, I promise.”
